Can anyone advise me on how long it would take to drive from Westport out to Keem Strand with a detour along the Atlantic Drive? The AA Route Planner shows the part of the drive from Mallaranny along the Atlantic Drive out to Keem Strand taking 1 hour and 55 minutes. With a distance of 55 km, this is an average speed of less than 30 km per hour. Does that sound right? Thanks in advance.
For a North American, that's probably a TAD optimistic. I think it would likely be closer to 2 1/4 hours and maybe even a little more. Lots of pretty scenery enroute -- to slow you with distractions.

67 reviews Its possibly about an hour if you go straight along the main road (R319) if you start wandering and exploring you could take a full day out and about. some of the borheen are pretty narrow..
Yes, that sounds about right. I'd advise spending a day there. It's one of Ireland's most beautiful areas, IMO, and you can get a sense of history there, if you take it slowly.
The Americans behind me as I last drove to the beach would have averaged about 5 km per hour, they were TOTALLY freaked out by the sheep on the road and the lack of wall between drop into the water and the road.
I am not like those Americans. Of course I will slow down and prepare to brake if sheep are moving around near the road, but I am not completely put off by narrow roads or steep dropoffs. But I guess I will have to assume that the AA estimates are right unless I find I am making better time.
Def plan on the longer times and if you make it faster it's a bonus! The roads are narrow and slow but that's to be appreciated. Enjoy your trip!!!
