Westport would be the best bet but they are close enough together the difference would be minimal

Louisburgh (population c 300) is much smaller than Wesptport (population c 5,000), so it's difficult to compare without knowing what your priorities are!

Westport:

If you want a quieter spot with easy access to the beach and likely better value for your money, and yet be within 15 miles of Westport with all that it has to offer, then Louisburgh is a good choice:

This map and details of potential activities of the Clew Bay area and South Mayo in general, might be useful in your planning:

It would be helpful to know people's interests, ages of children and which month your visit will take place.

This article includes suggestions for West Mayo, including Louisburgh, some of which would work for a family visit:

I faced that dilemma several times dee! It depends on the age of the kids. Louisburgh is quieter as it is smaller. It is lovely though and would always be my preference. The beaches are magnificent and accessible. The ferry to Clare Island is close by. Westport has more activities for kids, more shops and better choice of places to eat, of all types. Then again, they are only a matter of miles apart.

thank you so much for replys. very useful. kids are one and four. we r going peak summer season. we will do most of our own cooking as easier with young kids. we will be happy to stay on beach and boat rides if weather good. will we be missing out on anything by not staying in westport?
