Day Trips Around Offaly with Toddler

We'll be spending two weeks in Ireland based in Ferbane,Co Offaly. Any suggestions for things to do in the area which are suitable with a 20 month old? We're hoping for sun, but looking for rainy day ideas as well just in case! Thanks!

Not sure if any or all of these will interest your 20-month old, rain or shine. There might be places mentioned to keep the parents happy on both rainy and sunny days:

If you happen to be in Ireland towards the end of the month, you will be able to enjoy National Heritage Week from 20th-28th August, 2011. Lots of free events and many aimed at families.

If you default to Co Offaly and leave the other headings blank, you will find already some events have been lined up for the county:

There are lots of interesting things to do and places to see around Offaly. Lough Boora Parklands has many flat walking and cycling trails, you can hire bicycles with child carriers. Birr Castle Gardens and the Giant telescope, swimming pool in Birr which has children's pool, Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre, history of Tullamore Dew and town, Lockes Distillary Kilbeggan. Many short walking trails in the Slieve Bloom mountains some near Kinnitty . Clonmacnoise is beautiful a monastic site which dates back to 550 on the banks of the River Shannon { bring a picnic }

Core Crafts and Ballinahown Tea Rooms is worth a visit. It's on the right on the N62 driving from Birr towards Athlone and is right on the border between Co. Offaly and Westmeath. It has off-road parking. The craft shop is lovely and the tea room upstairs is beautifully decorated and has free wifi. It has an outside covered area with a couple of nicely laid out tables and there's also a sculpture gallery across the road.
