gloucester cathedral

taking the train to gloucester solely to visit the cathedral- how much time do we need to allot to going to the cathedral from the station and back to the station on foot or other means of transport?

we are thinking of taking the 11:00 or 12:00 train from paddington and the return trip at 5 p.m. or earlier.

It's about 10 minutes walk from the rail station to the cathedral. The cathedral itself could take ten minutes or two hours depending on your level of interest. The city centre itself is quite disappointing.

I would say two hours to see the whole cathedral, it is magnificent. Try to get on a crypt tour, well worth it. also the 'upstairs' part, take your time in the cathedral, its the only nice thing in the city.

The train from Paddington takes 2 hours minimum, depending on whether you get the direct train or have to change at Swindon. About 10 minute walk to the Cathedral - no real option other than to walk as it would probably take a taxi longer to get round town.

A couple of hours to really do justice to the Cathedral would leave time to visit the Folk Museum which is only a couple of hundred yards away. According to the website they don't open on Mondays.

The cathedral is spectacular. Check the website for any special events as occasionally there are exhibitions, lunchtime concerts or guided tours. You might also try to catch choral evensong - the choir is an important part of the cathedral and Gloucester has a strong music tradition.

Elsewhere in Gloucester (as it's a fair distance to go for a day so best make the most of it!), I'd recommend a walk around the Historic Docks which are about 10 minutes walk from the cathedral. There are a couple of waterside eateries/pubs there (Fosters is v friendly and does good food). There is also a lovely Beatrix Potter shop just off the cathedral close if you are familiar with her books for children.
