Harry Potter - airport advice

Hi all - Trying to price up and find the easiest way to visit Harry Potter Studios. We are flying in from Belfast so have been looking at Birmingham or Luton airports ...... unsure about transport links etc and where to stay. Ideally whichever route would be easiest and cheapest. (We are family of 5)

Thanks for any advice

The nearest airport is Luton.

But paradoxically it's an easier journey by train from Birmingham International to Watford Junction. A fast train every hour, taking under an hour, no changes. From Luton it's 2 or 3 buses or trains taking well over an hour.

Hiring a car might be easier

I want the simplest option - so one train from birmingham to watford would be ideal especially with five of us.

Not sure if hiring a car worthwhile since we are probably only going for an overnight stay. Mind you with five of us might be cheaper.

Not sure how much your rail fares will be but a cab from Luton airport to Harry Potter near Watford should be about £40 or £50. Maybe worth contacting a Luton cab firm and getting a quote.

There's a slower London Midland train from Birmingham to Watford Junction as well - it takes nearly an hour longer than the fast Virgin one but is cheaper. Still no changes. 2 or 3 trains an hour

Using Groupsave (buy on the day) it's £55 return total. Any off peak train . Using advance singles bought ahead of time from £42 total

But taxi from Luton will be faster and the same sort of price

Could hinge on the air fare - which is cheaper?

dzug - not a big difference in airfares - so for simplicity flying to luton and then taxi.

Hardygeranium Holiday Inn express definitely looks the cheapest and best review wise. Is it close by to anywhere for eating out in the evening when we arrive and maybe a little retail therapy before flying home ;-)

All in all an expensive enough weekend - but the kids are HP mad so hopefully worth it.

There is a cheaper option from Luton to Watford. Take bus A from Luton Airport to the Interchange by Luton Station. From there take bus 321 which runs every 30 minutes and will drop you at Watford Junction.

An 'Intalink Explorer' costs £12.50 for a group of four. Any additional Intalink Explorers you may need are £8.50 adult, £4.50 child 5-15 - under 5s travel free. You buy the tickets from the driver of the first bus and the tickets are valid all day - the 321 runs via the historic city of St Albans so you could break your journey there if you wished.

Note the 321 timetable changes on 30th June.

Not an expert on Watford but I think you are about a mile north of the centre. Watford has an excellent large shopping mall called the Harlequin Centre in the centre of town. It has one of everything and for all ages.
