A day out in or near Doncaster in February 2012

We are spending four days in Doncaster in February 2012. Part of our trip includes a day trip to York and another to Lincoln. We have a free day and would like any recommendations as to how to spend the day in or around Doncaster

We aren't interested in shopping centres and don't really want to travel more than an hour and a half as we have to use public transport.

Have a day in Sheffield. Best place for good beer. The Millennium Galleries and the Winter Garden are pleasant to visit. Travel on the tram - perhaps to Meadowhall (Meadow Hell) shopping mall.

Cathedrals (we have two) are also pleasant but not in the same league as York and Lincoln of course.

Train or bus from Donny to Sheffield. As in Donny, the bus and rail stations are close to each other.

You could travel to Leeds for the day - takes around 45 minutes on the train. Leeds is not beautiful visually like Lincoln or York, but it's a lively, vibrant city with lots to see and do. The shopping is excellent - I know you don't want shopping centres but the Victoria Arcade for instance is lovely to walk through. Numerous very good restaurants and pubs too.

There's a newish Museum in the city centre, plus a very good art gallery too.

Plus the very good Royal Armouries museum -

A short bus ride out of the city will take you here -

Sheffield is a nice place, Winter Garderns are nice and does have a nice cafe on theb bottom floor if coming in through the greenhouses. It's all free so it is recommended. Meadow hall, firstly from the bus and tram stop you do have to walk 5 minutes or so on a covered walkway, it's not steep but you will pass through the upper floor of the bus station if arriving by tram.

On the other hand there is a major science and technology museum a short distance away which I've been told can easily fill a day or more.

Sheffield is great (my own birth place) and has many good pubs, restaurants, shops and museums. If you are tempted I would go.

If you are looking for a shorter trip, as it sounds like you are having a hectic few days, I would go to the local town of Bawtry. It is very pretty and has loads of good places to eat and drink from Caviar or Emilio's if you want to splash out or I can recommend a little cafe called Bliss that I had my lunch in on New Years Eve. The food was excellent (all home made to specifications) and the service was second to none. There are also some really nice little shops that are worth a visit.

It isn't as in the same league as Lincoln or York but is really lovely and if you fancy a mooch about somewhere nice it is perfect.

I think you may be near Leeds to, so that's another option, to but I've not been there so I can't help on that I'm afraid.

Here is the Doncaster TI website - why not stay in town and see what Donny has to 'give' you are staying there, after all!!:

Failing that, for a 'quiet' day, I can vouch for what rachel_a has to say about Bawtry, nothing 'special' as such to recommend it, just a very attractive, nice place!

If you have a car, then Clumber Park and Rufford Abbey are not so far away:

Somewhere else to consider would be Beverley. It's got a minster, there are a couple of circular walks taking in the river and town of between 1 & 3 miles, some pleasant browsing sort of shops and plenty of cafes and restaurants. It takes about 1.25 hours from Doncaster station I think.
