Pubs/restaurants near Oxford Road station

My wife and I (both retired) are going to Manchester for the first time for four nights. Any recommendations for good but not too noisy pubs, bearing in mind our age? Also any good restaurants roughly in the vicinity, i.e. walkable within 10 minutes or so?

Many thanks in advance for any information.

That part of Oxford road is a popular student area. There are a whole host of pubs, clubs, restaurants, fast food, take aways in the vicinity.

Are you staying at the Palace Hotel? If so, it's lovely. There are a few student pubs just near there but it's not completely dominated by students. You're also just by the Palace Theatre and only 5/10 mins walk from the city centre.

The Cornerhouse complex is great. It's an independent cinema with a very nice bar. The restaurant upstairs is cheap and very good for veggies.

The Lass o'Gowrie is one of the oldest - and nicest - pubs in Manchester. That's just round the corner. East-z-East - one of best Indian restaurants - is just a bit on from the Lass (behind the BBC building). Next to the BBC building is Kro2 - quite a modernist bar that is very friendly and welcoming. There are a few bars opposite Kro2 as well.

Going the other way you have Fellicini's (an Italian opposite the theatre that gets good reviews) and, further along, Tai Wu ( a massive Chinese restaurant that's excellent and particularly busy on Sunday lunch). Carry on for a further 5 mins and you have the city centre with loads of options.

There's a nice casino sort-of behind the hotel. Never eaten there but I think they have a nice restaurant. There's also another casino opposite Tai Wu that's great and has a nice bar.

Three of the nicest pubs in Manchester are the Britons Protection, Rain and the Peveril of the Peak. They're all near to one another and you can get to them if you turn left immediately before Tai Wu (only 5 mins from Oxford Road).

Hi,

If you're here for 4 nights, you can explore most of the city centre - it's pretty compact - 20 mins or so to walk all the way across town - a taxi from where you are staying to the other side of town would only cost £5-8.

Over and above the pubs mentioned by NFMac, there is also The Vine Inn and City Arms - next to each other on Kennedy Street - proper pubs.

I like the following restaurants in town: The Modern, Ithaca, Dukes Grill, Albert's Shed, Luso, Grado, Picolino's, Chayophraya, East-Z-East. I'm pretty sure they all have their own websites, so a quick google will give you an idea of what they are like.

Hope that helps.

Pete

Thanks for the advice. We are actually staying in an apartment at the Quadrangle in Lower Ormond Street, so some of your recommendations will be very close.

there are some restaurants in the quadrangle. if you like indian, there's zouk. you'll also find a pan asian called rice, and a nando's. an italian, on oxford street / road, don geovannis would be good too. outside the immediate vicinity, you'll probably like mr.thomas' and sam's chophouses (link below). you won't struggle for options in the city centre though.

pubs? as above. lass o gowrie, peveril of the peak and briton's protection for cert.
