Ideas for day trips from Manchester - rent a car or train?

Will be in Manchester for 4 days in mid September with my wife. We have at least 2 free days and from previous forums there seem to be some good options for day trips from Manchester. We love the countryside but don't mind quaint towns either. Been to the Lake District last year, so ideally would like to see different places, always keeping Manchester as our base. Would appreciate suggestions on places to visit, and whether you recommend travelling by train or renting a car?

Chester is a must. Two direct train routes to choose from Manchester. Roman/ medieval walls, unique medieval two tier streets called The Rows, rive, cathedral, Roman amphitheatre, church founded in AD 689 etc.

North Wales is also vey eay to get to via Chester for scenery, castles etc.

If you have a car try the West Lancashire moors around Rivington and Anglezarke. Hidden gems that are just off the M61 only 40 minutes from Manchester

Derbyshire Peak District is well worth visiting, much easier by car. Many options - Chatsworth House & park (the top place to visit IMO), Baslow, Hathersage, Grindleford, Bakewell, Castleton, Hope Valley, Buxton and many more from which to choose.

If you like National Trust properties then a bit closer to Manchester is Quarry Bank Mill: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/quarry-bank-mill/

There's also Tatton Park (which isn't a NT property): http://www.tattonpark.org.uk/

Dunham Massey is worth visiting, Cheshire is also on the doorstep, you'll find quite a few possibilities there.

A hire car would be your best bet but, if you're staying in Manchester City Centre, parking can be expensive,

Matt...Tatton Park is a hybrid. It is NT but administered by Cheshire County Council (or their latest reincarnation) NT members pay for some things eg parking but not for others. Not that this would afect the OP on a on-off visit

OP...Quarry Bank Mill and the adjacent 'quaint;; cottages of Styal Village are great.

If you go to Dunham Massey take time for a quick look at Dunham Village itself. Very small but good pub and a couple of thatched cottages, which you wouldn't expect within a few miles of Manchester city centre. Or go a little further to the picturesque village of Lymm and then on to Grappenhall with its ancient church, stocks, cobbled street, humpbacked canal bridge and two pubs next door to each other!

I agree that Chester is a good place to visit. If you like shopping then there is cheshire oaks outlet near chester. Formbys point in merseyside is a lovely walk with lots of red squirrels. Macclesfield and Buxton are quaint little market towns. If you are wanting any advice on where to eat in manchester you will notice from my reviews i have eaten pretty much everywhere!

Thanks to all for your suggestions. We're probably doing one day in North Wales and another in the Chester area. Rental car is booked.

If you're into history and historic properties, a great NT place to visit in the Chester / North Wales area is Erddig, see http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/erddig/
