train route from holyhead to Burnley?

We are taking the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead and the train from there to visit the Accrington area where family is from. We will be staying in Burnley. We chose this transportation route to see parts of Wales from the train, with maybe a stop in Chester, if feasible. But I need to know which train(s) to take; I'm assuming we'd need to change trains at least once. Since we've never traveled in England before, explicit directions would be very welcome.

It is not the most straightforward of journeys although the services are regular. It seems that 3 changes are required at Chester, Crewe and Preston. For timings use www.nationalrail.co.uk Check with whichever ferry company you are using on the availability of a Sail/Rail ticket that will inlude the train fare. And you are right there are reat views to Snowdonia as you travel along the north Wales Coast.

Holyhead to Chester is a direct service taking around 1¾ hours. The Chester-Burnley routing I got had changes at Warrington & Preston taking just under 2½ hours.

If you're wanting to break the journey in Chester you would need to check that your ticket type allowed this (if you mean an overnight stay it will probably mean a separate ticket for the Chester-Burnley element).

The Man in Seat 61 website has lots of information on train travel in Europe - this is a link to the page on Sail/Rail but other pages may well help explain things for you:

It is possible to do it with just two changes, one in Crewe and then in Preston Looking at 4hrs 30minutes approx. …nationalrail.co.uk/service/…outwardJump
