Interesting/quirky/special hotel in Manchester/Salford

I'm booking a surprise trip for my boyfriend and I to go to Manchester for a weekend in the autumn for our anniversary - we'll be going for a nice meal and then to the Lowry for a play. We only live an hour away so we don't normally stay overnight, or if we do we just go for the cheapest Travelodge/Premier Inn type of place we can find. Since it's for our anniversary this time, I thought I'd try and find somewhere a bit more memorable (in a good way!) - it doesn't necessarily need to be posh and expensive, just somewhere that's a bit different or more enjoyable to stay in than the average chain hotel. I'd pay up to £100 but I'd prefer it to be less than this if I can. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've obviously looked at the listings on here already, but everything seems to be either nondescript or extremely fancy and expensive. Surely Manchester has some hotels that are nice and a bit different without being 5* luxury affairs!

There's a couple on here look less run of the mill tripadvisor.co.uk/HotelsList-Manchester-Uniq…

I've stayed at the midland which was nice, traditional but definitely not too fancy or formal.

I think that there's not a great variety of quirkier hotels etc., and your budget isn't huge for the city - I think I'd probably be surfing the serviced apartments, as they may be more cutting edge, have big windows/views or be in renovated warehouse type buildings - maybe something to give them the edge.

I like The Abode, a former cotton mill HQ (as I recall) with herringbone wooden floors, high ceilings and Ikea type furniture. It's a bit New York loft. Very central. My wife's favourite hotel !

Thanks for all the suggestions. I agree that there seems to be a surprising lack of interesting places to stay in Manchester, it's odd considering that the city is quite an interesting, alternative sort of place. Velvet, Blue Rainbow & The Abode are all beyond my budget for the date we'll be there, and the first apartment is booked up, but the Atrium apartment is a possibility. It's a bit over my budget but it does look nice, although it seems like a bit of a waste to have an apartment when we're only there for one night and will be eating out!

Any more recommendations much appreciated.

The Great John Street Hotel gives great quirk for the money, but then, it does cost a lot of money. Terrific hotel though.
