Perched Villages

We've been to Provence twice and just love the perched villages there. We'd like to see more of France but are trying to imagine how other areas would compare to Provence. Åre there any other areas with perched villages? Thanks.

The term 'perched village' is fairly loose. Generally a village on a mountain high above the surrounding terrain, but often used for those high above the sea on the Provence coast.

The mountainous areas have many such places. Follow the Alps from Provence to Lac Leman (Lake Geneva), also the Massif Central, and the Pyrenees range. Though they are not over the sea.

There are many other areas with villages clinging to the sides of cliffs and mountains, or stuck precariously onto the summit -- but the villages themselves are an afterthought of a reason to visit those areas.

Provence is beautiful, too -- but so is much of the rest of France. Each region has its own charm, and its own special things that make it wonderful.

You should browse the Plus Beaux Villages de France website. You should get some ideas about places to visit from it. les-plus-beaux-villages-de-france.org/…

Excellent recommendation, texhills -- I forgot about that site.

that listing really does have some amazing places. We've visited many, and each of the beaux villages has something that makes it unique.
