Travelling from Paris to Venice

Hi -thanks to some great advice from T.A, we have now abandoned my "pie in the sky" ideas of travelling from Paris to Provence and then in to Italy(time constraints)

We are now trying to decide if we should fly directly from Paris to Venice and continue down into Italy after a couple of days there, or to train from Paris to ? and then on to Venice. We would still be able to spend 2 days there. The night train doesn't interest us at all- I will just be a badtempered tourist in Venice if I travel that way.A train in the day might be nice in terms of seeing something of the countryside, but we can't seem to locate such a thing, and wondered if there was a stopover we should be making. Is it worth a day's travelling or should we fly straight there? Thanks!
