Where to stay/visit in Northwestern France?

We are taking the ferry to Calais, and will be driving for 3-4 days around northern France. We want to see Normandy, but are otherwise unsure of what towns to visit or which towns to stay in. Any advice you can provide would be much appreciated!

(If it helps, we are a couple in our early 30s and my husband loves history. I'm happy to see most anything!)

Look on the Normandy forum for plenty of advice and options.

Bayeux seems to be a good place to base yourselves.

If you are driving to Normandy you will pass near St Valery sur Somme, where William the Conqueror set sail for England, and a nice old town in its own right.

If the weather is poor there is a historic underground town near Naours, just north of Amiens.
