Train reservations needed in September?

We're going by train between Amsterdam, Paris, Caen, Dijon, and Brussels in the first two weeks of September. We're not planning on getting rail passes...we're (trying--Net's slow) to book the legs ourselves with the train companies. In early September, how important are reservations, or can we save the money?

The time to save money may have passed... you can get the cheapest fares online 3 months ahead. They're known as PREMS in France. Start looking now and you may get lucky and get a deal or 2.

Be sure to use the sncf.com site and if you need an English version use the British flag... ditto when asked for which country you're in. Otherwise you'll be directed to the more expensive RailEurope.

Tickets to Brussels and Amsterdam can be found at Thalys.com assuming you want the TGV.

There is good advice and how tos to be found at http://seat61.com

Remember that reservations are required for all TGV trains and I believe for Thalys as well, whether it's busy or not. But unless you're traveling by train the very first day you arrive, you can make those reservations after you get there at any rail station or SNCF boutique.
