5 days Paris to Toulouse - itinerary suggestions please?

We are a retired Australian couple, planning a short road trip from Paris to Toulouse. We have 5 days and would like to know what are must see's on that route and would welcome any suggestions on route planning and activities to include.

We like food, wine, historic sites and smaller villages. We prefer to avoid larger cities and crowds. We like the drive as much as the destination.

All suggestions appreciated.

Hi there

Last year we drove from CDG to Mont St Michel staying the night and then down western France seeing to name a couple of places Royan and Biarritiz. I used the - DK Backroads France - to help me plan our trip.

Kind Regards

Merran

I haven't travelled down that side of the country very often, but here are some ideas for stop-offs:

- The chateaux in the Loire Valley.

- La Rochelle - worth a visit - and enjoy some fresh oysters and a glass of Muscadet at one of the roadside seafood shacks.

- The Lot and/or Dordogne areas - worth a night or two to explore the pretty scenery and villages.

- Albi is a lovely town and worth a stop on your last day's travelling.

- The Millau Bridge

- The Orb Valley and the stunning mountains of the Haut Languedoc and/or Cevennes

You won't be able to do all these without it being too much of a rush, but you could pick a few and get a good feel for different parts of France.

So far, I don't think that the respondents have really looked at the journey YOU want to make, properly. You have some good suggestions, but lots that are just rediculously out of the way by many miles.

Plotting up on Viamichelin, this is pretty much a straight line south from Paris to Toulouse.

So, working around that, here are some places that are either 'on the line' or not too far off it, that would make some interesting stops.

Should I list more than you have time for, just pick the ones you like the best (well, I hope you like some of them, anyway!) - they are just suggestions after all!

Chartres - it is not far from Paris, but has a fab Cathederal

Orleans - well, not necessarily to stay, but you would 'hit' the Loire here, and actually it would be a convenient base for visiting one or some Chateaux - Chambord, Chennonceaux or Chiverny. You could stay anywhere in the 'triangle of the Cher-et-Loire 'defined' by Orleans, Vierzon and Tours.

Oradour-sur-Glane - devastated town, left 'as is' as a memorial to WW2

Limoges - Porcelain City

Tulle - Lace Town

Sarlat-la-Caneda - mediaeval town and 'gateway' to the Prehistoric sites of Les Eyzes and the Vezere valley

Rocamadour - Rocky Fortress City

Albi and the gorges of the Tarn

Viamichelin is a great site for plotting up routes and seeing what is 'around' in the way of interesting places to visit, as it is linked up with the on-line Michelin Green Guide. I make no excuse for using this resource to help you. I have not strayed far of of the direct route, but you can see, even just following that, there are many places of interest. There are many that I have not listed, but that you can find for yourselves!!

Go and enjoy an 'adventure'!

For 'the drive' Michelin maps are great. Any really scenic road is highlighted by a green line running next to it, so pick those, or anything that looks 'wiggly' and you can't go too far wrong!

I can't really recommend places to stay, as when I tour, I tend to just find places 'on spec'. Sometimes this works well, sometimes not so, but it all adds to the challenge!!

I do do a fair amount of 'pre trip' research though, these days, so I often have places 'in mind' to stay at, near to where I want to visit, if I can get a room, but I don't panic about accommodations now. Anywhere 'en route' that looks decent will do!

Just in response to comments made by EssexWanderer, I did look at the map and the journey the OP wanted to do between Paris and Toulouse - the suggestions I made were all roughly between the two, depending which route you choose. One or two ideas involve a detour, but with five days to do the journey, I thought they were still viable options.

I gave some suggestions for you to pick a few from - so, for example, spending a couple of nights in the Loire valley and then a couple in the Dordogne is very doable.

Alternatively, taking a different route south via the A71 and A75 would allow you to visit the Millau bridge, the Haut Languedoc and Albi - with still time to spend in the Loire if you wanted to make that detour for a night or two at the start of your trip.

I have driven to the Languedoc from Calais, spending two nights en route without feeling rushed, so I figured that four nights from Paris will give you some time to meander off the direct route on the A10. It does depend, however, on how you prefer to do this - ie. spending all four nights in one place half way down, spending two nights in two different places or finding a different place to stay each night.

Good criteria for seeing the real france, and you like the driving on a road trip....not many of us about. I would suggest............

From Paris -

Fontainbleu - chateau south of Paris

www.musee-chateau-fontainebleau.fr/spip.php…

Briare - forget the town, the attraction is the old bridge which carries a canal right over the River Loire. It has very ornate wrought iron work and you can stroll across on the tow path.

france-for-visitors.com/loire/briare.html

Sancerre - set up a hill above the river plain. An old town famous for its white wines and surrounded by vines.

france-for-visitors.com/loire/sancerre.html

Vichy - Spa town on the Loire. The large glass and iron spa building has all the different local spring waters piped in to sample, and is set on the edge of a park. There are also art deco period buildings and riverside walks.

St Flour - a typical town but the old centre is built on top of a huge rock which elevates it above the surrounding area.

Garabit - interesting overnight stop. The bridge across the gorge (by Gustav Eiffel) is illuminated after sunset. Dine and enjoy the scene.

Le Puy - if you are anywhere near this is a must. This is volcano country and the town is built arount big extinct volcano plugs. On one a church is built . On another is a hollow statue of Notre Dame with a spiral stair inside, made from the metal of cannon captured in the Crimean war. Great views. Hotel with good restaurant and regional produce, 5 mins from town.

Millau - famous modern bridge (already mentioned in another post)

Albi - (already mentioned in another post)

Gaillac - small town gives its name to the underrated red wine AOC. La Petite Cave on Rue Josef Rigal specialises in local wines (400 metres from main square).

To Toulouse.

Enjoy your road trip.

I came across this thread when I googled 'must see places' doing the same journey.

I was actually only looking for one place to stop to break up the drive, but I think we may have to overnight somewhere and 'pop' to a couple of these places now!

Thanks all.
