Barging in France

what are the pros and cons of barging on canals as compared to rivers.?

some say that as the rivers were there for years before the canals, the cities and sights are better when barging on rivers?

The Canal du Midi has been in service since the 17th century so the towns have grown up along its banks as the need has arisen. The only nearly complete river upon which rental boats are allow to travel is La Charante. The remaining routes are mostly on canals so the travel options are not realistically made using the logic you purpose.

Arguably, the Canal du Midi is the most popular route chosen by those who rent boats for travel on France´s interior waterways. Perhaps next are the routes in Burgundy followed by (in no particular order): Alsace, the Camargue, le Lot, la Charante.

I find the canals rather monotonous and prefer the small meandering rivers such as La Baise from Buzet-sur-Baise to Valence-sur-Baise and Le Lot from Bouzies to St-Cirq-Lapopie the to Luzech and return. There are excellent villages on La Baise, such as Vianne, Lavardac, Nerac, Moncrabeau, and especially Condom. The river is peaceful with the option of tying up to the quays in the towns and visiting the restaurants or under a tree in the middle of nowhere and self-catering.

Here is a link to some photos from La Baise.

Thanks for sharing your pictures. We're booked from Luzech this September for a week.
