Is it possible to get cash from super markets or department stores in France and Italy?

Certainly as long as the supermarket has an ATM machine which you will find at larger shopping centers.

in the US (perhaps elsewhere) it is easy to get cash when you pay if you use a debit card -- I don't think that is possible in Italy -- at least we didn't see people doing it.

I am not sure which Carlingford you are. Australia? I am familiar with cash out at eftpos machines here in Oz, but haven't ever been offered it in Italy or France nor seen it done.

Use your ATM/Debit card in an ATM to withdraw cash. They offer the service in multiple languages and do not charge you for using the machine. However, your own bank will probably charge you unless you have a fee free card.

Note also that the ATMs do not offer a choice of account on which to operate, so you should not use a Credit Card as it may be treated as a cash advance and then incur interest from the moment of withdrawal.

I have never noticed people in France getting cash from supermarkets when making purchases using a debit card as is common in UK and, probably, Ireland.

No -- you use your card for the amount of purchase only.

Most supermarkets and department stores are located near an ATM machine.

It has only just occurred to me that the British (and possibly Irish) practice of "cashback", taking cash on top of a purchase made by a debit card does not operate elsewhere. It is not something I do and I am irked when someone ahead of me at the supermarket kioskbuys a newspaper or chewing gum and £50 cashback when there is a functioning ATM round the corner. However, it is something that many people find useful.

It's been available in the US for years and years, too.

Australia has a similar system where people can get cash when they are buying something at a supermarket. Indeed, the self-serve check-outs at Woolworths now ask, as their first question, whether you want to buy something or get cash.

all I can figure on that one is that it's hard to walk more than a few hundred metres in any town or village in France and NOT come across an ATM machine
