south of France/Nice

any visiting South of France/ Nice in April 2013 with husband and a 8 year old boy for 1 week. We are going to fly into and out of Nice.

Any suggestions of where to go/stay and what to see? Is it better to drive or take the train?

We love history, nature, cultural stuff and of course a bit of shopping for me would be good.

1. Re: south of France/Nice

If you are really interested in history, you may want to visit sites in Western Provence such as Avignon, Arles, Nimes, Les Baux-de-Provence, and sites in the Camargue, including Aigues-Mortes - the departure-site for the French Crusaders, and Les Stes. Maries-de-la-Mer..

Driving will make it alot easier to visit more sites without having arrange all of your travels aroung train or bus schedules.
