Driving Through France

Will have 14 days beginning April 16 to tour France. Flying into and out of Paris, but will exclude Paris this trip. Need help with locating 3 or 4 cnetral locations in which to stay for 3 or 4 nites each, that will enable us to do day trips to tour the area within 100 miles. We are not major wine drinkers, thus while interesting it is not a goal of ours to visit every winery in a region. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Normandy would be worth a look - WW2 sites, Mt St Michel near-by, Honfluer and Deauville etc. We spent 4 -5 days in this area a few years back and really enjoyed the visit. We based ourselves in Bayeau - small enoufh to be manageable and large enough for restaurants, etc.

Do you have a guidebook for France?

Do you like prehistoric caves, Roman Ruins, WWII history, Medieval towns, churches, the beach? And that's just for starters.

I would suggest doing a little more research, and putting together a list of things that you would like to see and then we can help you with those plans.

Sarlat for several days in the Dordogne? Stop in the Loire at Loches on your way south from Normandy.

A good resource for your planning :

Frommer's "France's Best Loved Driving Tours" we usually use that to get some ideas of areas and places to visit.

I have a spare copy of "France on Back Roads" if you're interested...

Remember that France is about the same size as Texas -- both in terms of miles to drive, and the vast array of different places to see. Now add about twice the population, and 20,000 years of recorded human history....there are mountains, ocean, rolling hills, glamor, farms....

....it would be really helpful if you could narrow down just a little bit.

We're in the midst of doing research right now. Thought I'd ask for any tips others might have.

I understand what your saying. As we've begun looking into the trip it we're learning that whay you say is correct. Maybe even too much for 2 weeks. Perhaps we'd be better off focusing on 2 or 3 areas.
