Looking for a home in france for a month 2014

Hi , I am planning a three month trip to southern europe in 2014 with my wife and two kids (10 and 12). PLanning July 1 to October 1 2014. Looking at splitting the vaction into three and basing ourselves for a month each in three locations. We plane to Lease a car and then travel from these locations to nearby attractions. (maybe buy a tent and some camping gear)

At this stage we are planning a month in Portugal, then Southern France, then Italy.

We want to be based in smaller towns away from the tourist hype, but within travelling distance of the coast and other areas worth visiting.

From Portugal, we plan to visit parts of Spain (hopefully catch the stages of the tour de France in the Pyrenees), From France we want to travel into Paris and see the CoteD'azur, and from italy we want to travel down the coast but also hopefully get accross to Croatia.

I am looking for advice on suitable villages / regions to base ourselves in, or any travel tips.

Have you looked at www.viamichelin.com

This will give you an idea of distances and journey duration. It also gives you details of tolls.

Portugal isn't a good place to base yourself to see the Tour de France in the Pyrenees.

And if you want to visit Paris and the Cote d'Azur you'll need two different locations.

We've done a fair bit of driving in France - we usually average about 2,500 miles there each summer. And I think you need to look at getting a few bases not just 1 in France.

Campsites in France in the summer months are great for children. They can meet with other children who speak English. And you can hire lovely mobile homes. You can also hire the mobile homes on a weekly basis.

Take a look at the Les Castels umbrella group of campsites as an example. All the campsites are in the grounds of former chateaux and they are of a very high standard. http://www.camping-castels.co.uk/ It will give you an idea of what campsites are like.

Other than the Tour de France, what are you interested in? (Remember the 2014 Tour details won't be available until next August at the earliest.)

First of all, you may not be able to lease a car and travel across all of the different countries you mention. You should check with your hire company.

Bean A: Portugal isn't a good place to base yourself to see the Tour de France in the Pyrenees"

The poster doesn't intend to.........

The post actually reads "From Portugal, we plan to visit parts of Spain (hopefully catch the stages of the tour de France in the Pyrenees). From France......."

So, as I understand it, they will be travelling from Portugal to Spain and then into French Pyreneees.

"Remember the 2014 Tour details won't be available until next August at the earliest"

While precise details are to be released later in the year, some of the details are in fact already known. The Three Opening Stages will all take place in ENGLAND, starting on Saturday, 5th July 2014. The Grand Depart will take place in Leeds, Yorkshire and will travel from Sheffield to Cambridge on Day 2 (Sunday, 6th July). During the Tour’s time in Britain, stage three will link up two iconic cities: Cambridge and London, finishing at The Mall.

Andrew: The Tour this year (2013) will start on 29th June and end on 20th July. As you can see from the dates in my previous reply, 2014's Tour will start (and therefore end) a week later.

If you go to Portugal first for a month, you will not be in France for the Tour.

Yes, I may not be in France, butu when details of the 2014 tour are posted we could position ourselves within a short drive of the pyrenees stages. Dont forget Australians arent afraid to drive!

You'll have no problems with a lease car in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and around 20 other European countries. We've driven lease cars most years over the past 12 years and typically travel 10,000 km over 2 months. Be aware that in Portugal, there are now many toll roads that are electronic only and as you will be travelling in a French registered car you need to be aware of the options for paying tolls with a Foreign car.

Check other requirements for each of the countries you plan to drive in.

One place you might look at staying is Collioure. It is in France, on the Med, about 30km north of the Spanish border. We have stayed there 3 times now, initially for 3 nights in a hotel, then on 2 subsequent visits for a week each time in an apartment right on the beach between Collioure and Port Vendres, about 2km from each. Apart from the magic location itself, there are many easy day trips by car to Villefranche-le-Conclent, La Grotte des Grandes Canalettes, down the coast into Spain to Cadaques, a trip into the Pyrenees on Le Petit Train Jaune, a ridde on the Collioure tourist train up into the hills to Port Vendres and return.

There are a number of good rental properties in Collioure. We stayed in this one twice.
