Christmas closures in south of France

We considering visiting France around Xmas this year, mid Dec to early Jan. We wish to visit Avignon, Carcassone and then drive slowly around the south. We would fly into Lyon and out of Nice, or the other way around.

Just wondering what days are public holidays over xmas in the region, what days are we liking to find most things closed? We are not great shoppers but rather like to visit villages when they are bustling.

We are just in the early stages of planning, but any help would be appreciated.

"Just wondering what days are public holidays over xmas in the region, "

The same as in other areas of France : shops will be closed on Christmas Day and on January 1st. They will be open on December 24. Many shops will be closed on Monday morning or Monday all day. Many small supermarkets will be open on Sunday until 1 pm. There are also open-air markets on Sunday morning.

In Nice, shops are open on the sundays before xmas and often a couple after.

On xmas eve some shops shut at their normal time, others close from about 5pm onwards.

The xmas market, open air ice rink, funfair, Ferris wheel , indoor theme park and special events run on xmas eve, xmas day and new years day.

The normal markets are open to some degree if the holiday does not fall on a monday.

lots of restaurants [more and more each year] do special festive menus on xmas day, xmas eve and new years eve and day , others do their normal fare and others close

The only day with no public transport and near perfect closure of shops is May 1st

Thanks so much for your replies. Given that we will start/finish in Nice/Lyon, depending which way around we travel, would somewhere like Avignon be a good place to be for Xmas Eve/Day? We are not looking for any formal dining options, just want to be sure we can get something to eat and find things to do or see.

Be sure to visit the special Christmas markets, and look hard for one that features santons. Those are painted nativity-scene figures, along with dozens of assorted villagers. They come in all sizes; some are clothed.
