Living in France

We are a family with three children ages 8, 10, and 13 looking for a house in France for one two two months. We are looking for a town that has history, art, and places that are easy to walk. Bakeries, Cafe's, shops and supermarkets would be helpful. We will not have a vehicle. It would be helpful to be near rail and/or ferry for easy access to visit abroad. But we don't want too much hustle bustle of traffic. Any suggestions or advise would be appreciated.
