Where to stay in France

We are looking for a place to stay in France- on personal recommendation ( stayed there yourself)

There are 2 couples travelling. We are looking for a villa/ residence in a smaller village with restaurants. Planning to do day trips from a central point and come back for dinner in evenings.

We are in Burgundy for first week and then will look to find a villa ? Provence. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.
