France touring ideas?

My wife and I are considering taking a 14 day holiday in France this summer. The plan is to go Dover to Calais, then spend about 4 days driving west of Paris down to Provence. We then spend a week in a gite on/near the coast, before spending another 4/5 days driving back to Calais via eastern France.

We're looking for suggestions of places to visit on the way to and from Provence. Our interests are history, architecture, art, wine and nature. We've previously visited Paris and Normandy. We've already identified Chartres and the WW1 cemetries as possible places to visit. Does anyone have any suggestions for other places to visit on our journey to and from Provence?

Excellent suggestions from previous posters.

Just one more idea: You say you plan to visit Chartres, which is truly magnificent. But the countryside immediately around Chartres is rather boring. Instead of staying in or near Chartres, you could consider travelling instead via the beautiful Perche National Park, and visit Chartres from there:

The Perche National Park is about an hour's drive West of Chartres. It is in the Orne department of Normandy at the very Southern End, so it is possible you have already visited, in which case I'm sorry to waste your time. But if you haven't, you'll find the countryside and the style of the houses and other buildings very different from the more Northerly parts of Normandy. We stayed near Belleme which is a very characterful small town but there are also Remalard, Mortagne, and other towns and villages.

Thanks for the suggestions, it's certainly been useful. I think the Millau viaduct is going to be a definite part of our trip, as are Burgundy and Reims. Keep those suggestions coming.

If you have time, try and see at least a stretch of the Gorges du Tarn before Millau. Have a look at youtube for all kinds of videos to give you an idea. But the most important piece of advice concerning your trip is to avoid doing it in August if at all possible.

The Jura region is beautiful.

Take a look at Baume les Monsieurs http://www.baumelesmessieurs.fr/

As far as I am aware it is the only square gorge in the world. Well worth a visit.
