a little advice on our destination after Paris, please.

Hi, i am planning a trip to france for approx. 8 days in late April. I plan on Paris for 2-3 days and then probably renting a car because we like to explore towns we see along the way. I'm torn between going down to Lyon and visiting areas like Annecy. But then I looked into the Loire Valley and it looked nice too. I think both are about 4 hours from Paris in different directions but does anyone have any suggestions as to the better areas to visit. From there we plan to make our way back to Paris to fly home. Thanks for all of your help.

Also, I'd like to just make reservations in Paris, are both areas pretty safe to just "wing it" without reservation and drive at our leisure and just find somewhere along the way. I used to travel like this years ago in Europe without a problem but just wondering if things have changed, thanks again.

One idea might be to take the train to Macon, pick up your car and drive through the Beaujolais wine district before cutting east to Lyon for a couple of nights, therefore including country/village and city. Take the train back to Paris from Lyon.

The Loire is fabulous if you want to visit chateaus.

if you are not picky, you can find nightly lodging at local visitor offices. But half of my enjoyment is researching an area on the net and booking special places from home. We stay in chambre d'hotes that serve an evening meal. I Google "chambre d'hote et table d'hote charme" + the name of a target village. We have stayed with amazing people in luxe homes, enjoying a communal dinner party at night for comparative pennies.

Thank you so much, that's what i used to do, except it was before the internet so i just looked for the signs and i stayed in some lovely homes with people and they usually served breakfast. Thanks for the information!

Be aware late April is Easter holidays and could be busy.

Oh I guess I realized that it was Easter but didn't realize that it would be busy, thank you so much, I can be flexible on the dates.
