London to Nice Road Trip?

Hi,

Basically me and a group of mates, 3 - 5 of us [most likely 4] are deciding whether to go on a little road trip to Nice. First we were wondering if it would be easier and cheaper to rent a car in London and travel to Lyon [where we could possibly stay the night], then drive down to Nice. Or would we be better off taking a eurostar train from London to paris, hiring a car in paris and driving down?

We'd probably like to stay in nice for 4/5 days during mid/late august. So we were just seeking some advice on possible alternative routes to nice and rough estimates on costs for the 2 different driving routes. Rough guide on accommodation costing would also be appreciated [doesn't have to be anything fancy].

Many thanks,

Why not just take the plane to Nice and avoid all the hassle - and expense - of driving? If you rent a car in London, make sure the rental co. allows you to take the car out of the UK & at what cost, not to mention the fares for crossing the Channel. See www.viamichelin.com to get an idea of routes, driving times, fuel & toll costs by car. The times do not allow for any stops.

Mid/late August on the roads ...be prepared for long traffic jams. The French are all on holiday and loads go down to SOF in their cars

I agree with tradeform - fly to Nice

Or travel by Eurostar to, say, Avignon, and hire there. There is a through train from London on Saturdays, otherwise connections are available via Lille.

Eurostar prices to southern France can be surprisingly reasonable when compared with the driving coats which will include channel crossing, fuel, tolls (probably around 200€ round trip) and en route accommodation (you won't drive there in a day, particularly with 1 driver).
