South of France in December?

We are in the very early stages of planning our holiday and visiting the Sth of France has been on our list for a while now. We always travel In the European winter so the cold is not a problem for us.

However, is this a reasonable time to visit the South or is it a destination best left for another time? Apart from cold weather, should we have any concerns? We love smaller villages and less touristy places so would have a car and we are looking at travelling from west to east and departing for home from Nice.

This is just a very general question to start with but any opinions would be welcome.

We spent a very pleasant week in Nice in December, where the weather is a bit better than western Provence in the winter. You could stay in any of the villages in the Nice region: Villefranche-sur-Mer, Biot, Mougins, Mouans-Sartoux, Valbonne, and more.

The Cote d'A'zur originally developed as a winter destination for northern Europeans. However, weather conditions and short daylight hours may restrict or limit touring around the mountainous areas inland.

Thank you all for your feedback. We are looking to fly into Nice, visit Monaco and then move westward in the South, so visiting Avignon area, Carcassonne etc. A couple of weeks later we fly out of Paris, so we will make our way North. We have not chosen which route yet. We will look to have a couple of bases and do day trips and we will have a car.

We have visited much of Italy, Bavaria and Austria in mid to late December and found it a wonderful time to visit, with less tourists but still lots to do. I am a bit concerned by the link you provided Diz. I hope this will also be a good time to visit France and not too quiet.

We are not locked into anything yet, apart from the air travel, so we could alter our plans a bit if necessary to do less of the south and more of somewhere else.

Thanks again for the assistance, it is much appreciated.
