The longer you wait, the more it will cost. French train tickets go on sale 3 months before travel, and the cheapest tickets usually sell out quickly. Prices keep going up as the travel date gets closer.

You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, in English at www.tgv-europe.com/en but use Antarctic as the "Ticket collection country" on the first screen to avoid being transferred to RailEurope, which has much higher prices and does not list all the trains. You can find train times very easily on www.deutschebahn.de for this journey.

Most journeys require a change at Basel from the French side to the Swiss side, but that's a very easy flat journey. Note that you should have your passport to hand at Basel when you walk from the French part of the station to the Swiss part. It may not be asked for but spot checks have been known.

It's very straightforward, and should you have to leave it to the day to book, make sure that you allow enough time at Colmar railway station for the clerk to do the paperwork. There will be no problem in finding a seat on trains on that day if you simply decide to 'walk up'.
