Bayonne to Arcachon

We are a Seniors couple and intend to drive north towards Arcachon in late September. We hope to take coastal roads rather than Autoroutes.

We will probably not leave Bayonne until late afternoon and would like to make an overnight stop along the way in one of the quieter towns where we can park the car, relax and walk to a restaurant!

Mimazan looks a possibility but we'd appreciate suggestions for other suitable places.

Will it be necessary to book accommodation beforehand? Do the Tourist Information offices offer a list or booking service for these towns?

Any help with route or location will be much appreciated.

It is not a long drive, about 2.5 hours via the N-10, which is inland, the small roads that run up the coastal hinterland take a little bit longer, but you can still do the trip easily in an afternoon.

That section of the Atlantic coast is very flat, with beaches backed by forest (mostly pine). You mostly drive through the forsted areas, and only see the coast itself if you take a side trip down to one of the resort towns.

Mimizan Plage is approximately half-way on the drive. It makes sense from that point of view as a stopover place. I have only ever stopped there for a 'tea break' on that journey up the coast, but it is a pleasant little place, different by far to Bayonne. I think it would make a nice contrast for you.

Late September is getting very 'end of season-ish' though and many of the small resorts start to shut down by then. So it might be prudent for you to book ahead, if you want to stay there.

Here is the local Tourist Office website (in French):

I agree with everything EssexWanderer has said.

An alternative to the coastal route might be to travel more inland i.e. east of the N-10. It is nowhere near as direct but you will enter the Parc Naturel Régional des Landes de Gascognes:

A mid-point stop for this route might be Sarbres. Call ahead to see if places are still open at the end of September. There are only 3 places to stay listed on Trip Advisor:
