Train Travel between France and Spain

In August we are looking to travel from bayonne to pamplona, hopefully by train and wondered if this was possible? Can you travel direct or would we have to go via San Sebastian? Any advice would be very helpful. We were hoping to make a day trip of it too and therefore have no problem with an early start/late return.

It suggest that it is not possible as a day trip as there are very few trains across the border and only two trains a day between Pamplona and San Sebastian / Irun.

From Bayonne you can get to Irun, first station in Spain then from Irun to Pamplona.

Problem one is there are only two trains a day from Irun to Pamplona, at 0710 and 1555. These do run via San Sebastian. There's nothing else.

Problem two is that the very infrequent trains from Bayonne to Irun do not connect with either, unless you take it that a 2hrs 30 minutes wait is a connection. That's the afternoon train, there is no way to get to Irun for the morning train.

You might enquire in the Spain forums about buses between Irun and Pamplona but you still have to address the issue of crossing the border as there are no trains across from Bayonne until almost midday.

There is a local train from the French side of the border at Hendaye to a different station in Irun. This is the Euskotren operation between Hendaye, San Sebastian and Bilbao. www.eusktren.es

I don't think you can make it by train but I hope this helps a bit and good luck!

Last year CONDA operated one bus a day from Biarritz to Pamplona. It too went via Irun and San Sebastian.

There are currently two daily trips with them Biarritz - Pamplona but the first one doesn't get there until 1335 and the last return journey is at 1400.

It might be worth checking further as they also have buses San Sebastian - Pamplona and San Sebastian is a feasible journey, at a push, from Bayonne.

Many thanks for that. If we were to drive to Irun it may make the journey possible. Would you know details of the return trains from Pamplona to Irun?
