Driving from Calais to Dordogne

Hi

We are planning to drive from Calais to the Dordogne this Easter Bank Holiday (clubbed with the Royal wedding). We will be travelling for a week. I reckon it is about 8-9 hours drive from Calais to Dordogne so would like to break the journey. Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent (but cheapish) hotel or a town/ village /tourist attraction worth a small detour to somewhere around about the half way mark - about 4-5 hours drive from Calais?

I have not yet booked any accommodation in Dordogne so would appreciate ideas on where to live (caravan/motor home would do too as on a tight budget). Is there any other place worth visiting between Calais to Dordogne?

Thanks very much for any replies, much appreciated!

Take a look at www.viamichelin.com -- it will give you driving routes and distance. Add 30% to the driving time to allow for traffic, tea breaks, refueling, weather, etc.

Look where it puts you at the 4-5 hour mark, then hone in on that with your guidebook to see what's nearby.

(Anything worth visiting between Calais and Dordogne? Oh, about 90% of the country....)

You don't have to drive through the city -- you can come down the A1 and pick up the A104, a short jog on the A4, then the N104 all the way round to the A10 to the southeast (but ViaMichelin would have told you that) -- even if it's a few more kilometres, it will be faster and far less stressful than driving through the city.

Depending on which part of the Dordogne you are coming too, I would come down the A20 ie Orleans-Vierzon-Chateauroux-Limoges-Souillac. There are no tolls payable after Salbris (nr Vierzon) so it works out much cheaper than coming all the way down the A10.

Orleans would be a possible overnight stop as well.
