Hi Ted

I am not an expert on the Dordogne region but have been several times and as you had not yet got a response I thought I would try and help

It would help knowing when you were thinking of going - July and August can get very busy and if you have not yet booked accommodation then you may need to act quickly.

Most house rentals are rural or in the smaller villages - this is fine if it is what you want and you do have that vital car. The only really sizeable town in the main toiurist region is Sarlat and if you want a nightlife with restaurants within walking distance then this is your best option.

Your choice of location really depends upon what your interests are - for example if the prehistoric rock art is your priority then you should consider somewhere along the Vezere valley such as Les Eyzies or Montignac

By the way the Noir, Vert, Blance and Poupre designations relate to different parts of Perigord and not the official Department of Dordogne. Perigord Noir is the most visited part and for good reason, nice as the other parts are.

As for restaurants - well again it depends upon what you want but check out this website for useful starters - it is not just about fine dining

start here: http://www.dordogne-perigord-tourisme.fr/

then here: http://www.perigorddecouverte.com/

Decide what you want to see -- the area is quite large, and there is no way you could do more than just scratch the surface -- so you have to do the weeding out before we can be of much help.

I am local and run a tourist company called Dordogne Experience. I would recommend staying in Sarlat. It has an amazing market twice a week. Is close to Les Eyzies, La Roque Gageac, Domme, Montignac and other beautiful towns. I do not know any self catering places to stay as we use hotels for our business but check out http://en.gites-de-france.com/ which have to pass certain criteria to advertise on the site. As for restaurants... there are so many to choose from you will be spoilt and the food here is so amazing, you will be fine. It can be expensive but I would recommend planning to eat out at lunch time, and just having a snack in the evening... this means you will be able to take advantage of the "plat du jour" or "menu du jour" plate or meal of the day, which are usually cheaper than the standard menu.
