Ideas for day trips

Hi

We have booked a villa for 7 days just outside Bergerac and are looking for advice on day trips by car (not longer than an hour to an hour and half travel if poss as have 2 small children)!

Want to get a good feel for the region and experience some of it's authentic offerings.

Any advice gratefully received!

I have been to the area at least a dozen times and there is so much to see and do it is practically impossible to give you specific advice, especially without knowing your interests, your children's ages, etc. But this website (in English) will hopefully give some initial ideas:

A few ideas:

La Chaudron Magique - brilliant for kids (essentially a farm visit with lots of animals, goat milking...)

Canoeing on The Dordogne

St Emilion - great place to tire the kids out up and down the hill, and there's a castle

Hi there, it does depend on the age of your children, but here are a couple of suggestions which may/may not help:

Chateau des Milandes at Castelnaud-la-Chappelle is a beautiful chateau & gardens, and has a Birds of Prey show every day in season

The Castelnaud Chateau also has an impressive Museum of Medieval Warfare, if your kids are old enough for that, and it has a summer activities program

Take a drive to explore beautiful bastide village Monpazier, & Chateau Biron. There's a treetop adventure park, Parc en Ciel, nearby at Lacapelle de Biron

You can google any of these to get opening times, locations etc. Have fun!

Go to your nearest Office de Tourisme and ask about any Medieval Fetes or Fairs, which many villages host over the summer...lots of atmosphere and fun for kids

There's also a gokarting track on the D936 on the west side of Bergerac (once again, depends on their ages)

Have a picnic on the riverbeach at lovely Limeuil, where children can paddle

Stunning caves at Gouffre de Proumeyssac, just south of Le Bugue

Depending on what your kids like, the steam train at Guitres was very popular with mine when they were younger. You board the train in Guitres, there is a small museum but the real excitement for small people is watching the man shovel the coal into the furnace. The journey is through pretty countryside and then you stop in a woods and walk down a track to a picnic area where you can buy crepe with various contents and the kids can play and then about an hour later you go back on the steam train again. Its good in rain or shine. Particularly suits small boys with Thomas obsession.

The tourist steam train departs every Sunday and on bank holidays at 15:30, stopping for an hour and a half at the Moulin de Charlot and returning at 18:15. Tickets can be bought at the Gare de Guitres, no reservation is necessary. For more information: 05 57 69 11 48.
