August or July for visiting Brittany?

We are planning our trip for the summer of 2014 and I'm trying to decide between August and July.

The advantage of July is that there is a renaissance faire in Dinan that looks really interesting. My family loves these types of faires in the US and so we're really interested in going to this one. I do worry that it will be absurdly overcrowded.

I usually prefer to travel in late August, because airfare is significantly cheaper, and the weather tends to be a bit milder. We live in NY state, so my son is still on summer holiday - most of the US is back to school before the last week of August. We loved Paris in August this past year - there were no crowds, and we had no line at the Louvre.

So what are the pros and cons of July vs August in Brittany?

My family would like to see Dinan (if we don't go to the ren faire, we'll just go for market day), a megalith or two and the ocean. We'll also wander over to Mont st Michel and a quick jaunt through the Loire valley on our way back to Paris. We're thinking our trip will be about two weeks. Thanks so much!!

Hey Tracie. I've visited Brittany in both July and August and I must admit I've never had a problem with crowds anywhere in Brittany at any time during the summer. I'm sure my experience must run contrary to what others have experienced so maybe I'm just lucky. I really think that in only the most touristed places will you run into any sort of crowds and even then the crowd problem won't approach the levels you'll have in the south of France in the summer. So I'm saying pick the time that works best for you. The last week in August will be less crowded than other times of the summer.

Perhaps you've read my Brittany trip reports already but if not I'll give you the links if you'd like to do some research. If you want to look at my trip report about exploring near Dinan, Saint-Malo and Mont Saint Michel (eastern Brittany) then feel free. The report has lots of photos and descriptions of the places I visited. At the very end of the report are links to every major tourist office website in Brittany:

Here is a similar report about exploring The Gulf of Morbihan in western Brittany. Lots of megalith stuff in this report: http://tinyurl.com/8xuuryc

If you want some tips on the Loire here are some of the major tourist office websites for the Loire:

We've been to Dinan 3 times now. A week in June 2010, a week in June 2011 and 4 days in July 2012 over the Fetes des Remparts weekend. Both years in June the weather was pretty miserable especially from 11-18 June 2011 - cold and wet. In July last year it was brilliant and the Remparts weekend was great. The town was buzzing, full but we had no problem getting a table in the restaurants, even lunch on Saturday at Creperie Ahna. A lot of the influx seemed to be eating sausages wrapped in galettes, sitting on the pavement. We would normally have stayed in an apartment but because most of these run bookings from Sat - Sat they just didn't work for the weekend. We would have needed 2 weeks or arrive on Saturday afternoon when the town is locked down to vehicles. We stayed at Ibis Centre and it was great. A big room, very large bed, directly beside the start of the Grande Pavane on Sunday night.

We stayed for the ridiculous rate of €196...for the 4 nights.

I'd be scared to death to visit Dinan on a wet, rainy day....once you got started down that hill, I'm not sure you'd ever stop!

It's not the walking down rue du Jerzuel and rue du Petit Fort, it's the walking back up again that gets me. We had a little 3 level town house beside the Jardin Anglais and the Cathedrale Saint Sauveur. We spent a lot of time inside looking out the windows at the yellow anorak clad folks doing the tour.

Seriously, Dinan is beautiful, even in the rain.

Thanks so much! FM - I already had your Dinan report pinned to my pinterest board when I made this post :-) It's lovely - thank you!

Wigwam - thank you so much, that's fantastic to hear!

Sunshine - Hubby lived in San Francisco for a while and I lived in Seattle. So big rainy hills don't scare us too much! ;-)

Both July and August were stunning this year. We've just bought a 40 bed adventure/accommodation/reunion centre in Le Quiou just south of Dinan and our groups had a great time. If you're in wonderful medieval Dinan, try and get away and out and about as the restaurants are sadly mostly creperie and tired touristy. Auberges that do a small ouvrier's (worker's) prix fixe menu are often excellent in the villages. Hede (about 30 min drive) has no less than three superb restaurants which knock the socks off anything we saw in paris a week ago.
