Places to visit by public transport from Rennes?

I'll be staying in Rennes for a few days in the run-up to Christmas and was wondering if any Trip Advisor members could recommend places for a day-trip which are accessible by train? Merci bien.

If you would consider a bus trip you can get to Mont St Michel, which I thought was magical.

My family also enjoyed Carnac when we stayed in Rennes. It's got stones a bit like Stonehenge but all in a line.

We went to see Vitre just because it it twinned with Lymington which is local to use. It is a very cute small town with a castle.

I think we also visited Quimper and Nantes on the no car holiday in Rennes. Rennes is quite nice too. I have only been there in summer but I imagine it will be decorated for Christmas. We went to a museum in Rennes with a planetarium, but I have forgotten the name.

My spell check is doing weird things here so apologies for typos!

The options closest to Rennes would be Mont Saint-Michel, Fougères, Dinan and Saint-Malo. Since daylight hours will be short in December you may want to limit your travel time from Rennes.

You can look at the tourist office websites for each to learn more:

Rennes: http://www.tourisme-rennes.com/

Dinan: http://www.dinan-tourisme.com/

Saint-Malo: http://www.saint-malo-tourisme.com/

Fougères: http://www.ot-fougeres.fr/accueil

Mont Saint-Michel: http://www.ot-montsaintmichel.com/index.htm

Of course there are certainly other places you could go but these are the highlight places closest to Rennes.

Here is a website that will show you a map of where trains go in Brittany:

This website is great for trip planning in Brittany, whether by bus or train:

You can look at that website to find bus network maps.

To check train schedules and prices you can use http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/

When using the http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/ website if you get redirected to the RailEurope website try again and enter your ticket collection country as Antarctic.

You may need to use a combo of the SNCF website and the breizhgo website to search itineraries because some journeys that show on the breizhgo website may not be available on the SNCF website.
