Scenic France

We're planning a trip to France for 3 weeks and are unsure which areas to visit and where to base ourselves in each. Last trip we did Paris, Avignon, St Paul de Vence and Dordogne. This time we are considering the Loire, Burgundy and the Rhone, but are open to other options. We particularly like picturesque villages and pretty countryside, with good cafes and restaurants to refuel, and like to stay in self-contained cottages or B&B's. Any ideas on where we should go and how long we should spend in each region?

For scenery and small villages, Burgundy was superb. On some of our drives through the countryside, sometimes the only sign of modernity between one medieval village and another was the paved road and a few other cars.

We particularly enjoyed the old villagestowns of Brancion, Chapaize, and others west of Tournus, Vezeley and the Morvan hill region, and the small city of Semur-en-Auxois, which we used as our base in the northwest Burgundy.

We drove a route of Lyon-Beaune-Dijon-Vezelay before heading to Loire Valley. This was probably the most beautiful stretch we saw. There are rolling hills of farmland that made driving on the Autoroute very enjoyable.
