Spend some time walking around the town - it's gorgeous. And do visit the medieval hospital (it's in the centre), it was one of the highlights of our three week trip to France this summer.

The first thing to do is buy (or borrow...) a Michelin green guide to Burgundy and the Michelin 1:200,000 scale map of the region. When you look at the map you will see a lot of roads, particularly west and north-west of Beaune, that are highlighted in green. Those are are the roads with especially good scenery. Plot a route using those roads and perhaps taking you eventually to Dijon. Google any likely looking villages along the way that are not mentioned in your Burgundy guide. Dijon is worth seeing and you could take the road back to Beaune (not the Autoroute...) through some of the most fabulous wine country and beautiful villages anywhere in the world

When you get the guidebook you will also soon discover that there are a number of places well worth a stop between Paris and Beaune and several more interesting ways to make the trip (at least in one direction...) than the Autoroute.

“A wonderful day which exceeded expectations”

Taste Burgundy - Private Wine Day Tours

Michael_Firth 1 contribution Sevenoaks

Jul 26, 2010 2people found this review helpfulCristina gave us an excellent day which all four of us – two children and two adults - thoroughly enjoyed, and which well exceeded our expectations. She had clearly put a lot of thought into the day to ensure we were all given a varied, interesting, and enjoyable Burgundy experience. We also appreciated the information she sent us in advance about restaurants and shopping, and the local Burgundy produce she provided for the picnic.

We had two overall objectives for the day: to taste representative examples of good Burgundy and to learn more about the region and the wines. Cristina more than met these objectives. Having collected us from our hotel, she started the day (in a stunning position overlooking the vineyards) with an explanation about wine-making in Burgundy, the different characteristics of the different districts, the details of appellation system, and how to read a Burgundy label. This was a most helpful introduction which put the rest of the day, and the wines we tasted, into much clearer perspective. Cristina has herself worked in wine-making in both Burgundy and Australia, so the information she gave us and the answers to our questions had the considerable benefit of first-hand knowledge and experience and were exactly what we wanted. We also appreciated her choice of wine-tasting visits to producers in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The wines we tasted were not only good representatives of their appellations and vintages, but also gave us an appreciation of the way in which the different red and white styles vary widely over really quite small areas.

We spent 8-9 hours with her, but the day didn't end there. Cristina obtained us a reservation at "Aupres du Clocher" in Pommard. We had a lovely meal there, and enjoyed a bottle of Pommard 1° Cru recommended by the restaurant. The combination of the Pommard and the mousse d'epoisse was one of the most perfect food/wine combinations I have ever tasted!

I was in Beaune about 6 years ago with my husband. I would imagine the tourist office is still there, in the middle of town. This office is great, and you can walk in and sign up for tours of the area (including vineyards) in your choice of languages. We were happy with the half day tour we took, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Another thing we enjoyed about Beaune were the many many shops with wine gear, including some esoteric items. These make great souvenirs and great gifts to bring home.

We also happened to stumble on a confirmation ceremony at the church (cathedral?) in Beaune, with the children all dressed in white and each holding a candle. Sometimes serendipity leads to a great moment.
