Dijon, wine & Colmar

Hello we have 3 days available to do either Dijon (Burgundy) or Alsace and we are 4 adults 2 couples) who all prefer red wine so hence think Dijon i sthe place to go (first time for all of us) coming in from Paris on 14th Sep.

I would like some advice on :

stay in Dijon or surrounding villages?

rent a car?

Is it better to book Wine tours or can one go on our own for wine tasting? Cant manage driving in such a case unless we stay in a nearby village & drive?

recommendations on where to stay?

Lastly can one visit Colar as a one day trip from Dijon?

Grateful for advice

Thanks

For red wines, you will be better in Burgundy. The only red wine in Alsace is a very light Pinot Noir. You could go to Colmar for the day by train - it takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, generally with 1 change. The tickets will be cheapest if you book them in advance, as part of the journey is on a TGV train.

If you aren't planning on buying a lot of wine, but just tasting, you'd be better off booking a wine tour. Wine-growers usually welcome visitors who want to taste (free of charge) in order to choose what to buy, but many aren't set up for paid wine-tastings, unless they are organised by a tour company.

To visit the vineyards and wine villages on your own, you will need a car, or rent bikes. You could also walk. Beaune is a lovely small town to stay in, with all facilities, and it's easy to go for a hike out into the vineyards from there. There's also a good tourist office in the centre.
