Things to do in Dijon

My husband and I have two days in Dijon before moving on to our river cruise in October. Viking will be providing a3 hour tour that's an overview of the city. We will also be doing a wine tour on the second day. But I would like to see more. Can anyone recommend any short excursions to fill in the gaps while there? We love food, wine and history. We are up for anything, so any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

Sorry that you never got an answer! Are there not Dijon experts here on TA? I would love to hear people's thoughts on this myself. My wife and I are spending about 5 days in Dijon the latter half of August - would love to hear about things to do, including day trips from Dijon. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Have you read a guidebook? That would be a good way to get started, as we here cannot make valid recommendations without knowing what interests you. I recommend the Michelin Green Guide to Burgundy, which has a wealth of helpful information.

I think our OP has come and gone to the river cruise in October 2017. Perhaps they could post a brief report as to what to do in Dijon.

You are correct, Catullus, including the Michelin Green Guide for Burgundy.

We are just volunteers here. We do not write itineraries, but can comment on something specific.

Hi Charming_Karl. I am interested how you went on your stay in Dijon. We are planning on staying there for four days in late September. We were also thinking of walking and catching the local buses to explore around the region and wineries. Any thoughts.

Check the tourist office websites for Dijon and Beaune and Cote d'Or. For biking check burgundy-by-bike.com. For wine google "burgundy wine trail". For transport check viamobigo.fr.

Mark T., thanks for your interest.

Tomorrow will sadly be our last day in Dijon. We have had a great week. We have taken a taxi just once - from the train station to our AirBnB flat on the day we arrived, so that we could meet our host. Otherwise, we found the free shuttle bus that covers a good deal of the city center and goes back and forth to the train station (or at least gets within 1-1/2 blocks of the station).

As for things to do, without question, even under repair, the Beaux Arts Museum has to be at the top of the list. They expect to finish renovating the building and cleaning the artwork by May 2019. The audio guide is first rate, and the excellence of the collection (again, judging by what I saw, which was the Medieval and Renaissance collection only) makes the visit a top ten art museum experience.

The two main churches, Notre Dame and the Cathedral of Saint Benigne, are wonderful. The Archeology Museum, in the former monastery buildings attached to the Cathedral, is worth a visit, as are the Sacred Art Museum and Museum of Burgundian Life which are contained in another former monastery.

Wandering the old city and taking in all the color of the old buildings and exploring all the old streets for restaurants and shopping and such can keep you busy for at least a couple of days.

Incidentally, we did not find the Tourist Office much help, but then again, we may have just gotten someone who was new or something.

For a day trip from Dijon, we went to Beaune, and loved seeing its Hospice with its van der Weyden altarpiece which is stunning. Also had a nice wine tasting there, and ate some good food.

We just happened to be here for the week of their Wine Festival, which means folk dancing and live music in the evenings, really great. Happy to share with you some of our experience, even if I am "just a volunteer."

Thanks Karl. Always great to get the view of a “volunteer”/tourist 🙂👍. Looking forward to visiting there.
