Around Dijon - smallish towns for overnight stay.

Hubbie and I are travelling to Italy in a couple of weeks time, breaking our journey over 3 nights. We reckon we could get to about Dijon on day 1 and I'm looking for a smallish town, maybe north of Dijon, close to the motorway that would make a nice overnight stay.

why not stay in the south instead? I'm not sure you'll find an accommodation very easily in the north.

The golden slope is close to the motorway (A6) (exit 2 and 1 on the A31) and there are many villages between Dijon and Beaune. Nuits st Georges would be the biggest "smallish town" and there are many villages with a famous wine name (Gevrey Chambertin, Fixin, Chambolle Musigny etc..)

Check www.cotedor-tourisme.com to find hotels and guesthouses.

Welcome to Burgundy (even for a too short stay!)

This year will be our fourth visit by car to Tuscany. By the time we reach Dijon it feels a long day so we just want to have a decent meal and somewhere clean and comfortable to rest. Each time we have used the Novotel Dijon-sud hotel. At first sight it isn't very impressive, being in a commercial district of town, but the restaurant food is very impressive for a reasonable price. The rooms are clean and functional to the usual Novotel formula. It also affords easy access to the motorway for our onward travel to the next nights stop in Chamonix. A place not to be missed. Next day through the Mont Blanc tunnel and ino Italy. Happy to provide any further info.

My husband and I just returned from France and found the accomodation research for the Burgundy region quite challenging. But we found the most charming bed and breakfast (chambre d'hote) in a small village called Arcy-sur-Cure about an hour from Dijon. The home is called "A la Croisee des Coeurs", run by Isabelle Deslot (very informative about french history and the best french cuisine) and Jacques Chan, who is fluent in English. Not only is the historic home charming and clean (with one suite separate from the house), but it is located by all the interesting cathedral towns of Vezelay and Auxerre, both worth a visit. It is located directly off the motorway, and comes with a wonderful breakfast and kind hosts with a wealth of information. And it's reasonable! Their website is http://cf.geocities.com/chambrehotebourgogne/ and we made contact via email.

Bon voyage! Christina
