Overnight stay in Chateaus

I'll be heading to the Loire Valley in June and staying in Amboise 2 nights. Does anybody know of any nearby great Chateaus to stay overnight in? Of course, with the weak U.S. Dollar, hopefully something not too expensive. Thanks.

If you can't find an authentic chateau for a reasonable price........you might look at Domaine de L'Arbrelle as an alternative. A converted/extended farmhouse on the edge of Amboise and on the edge of the Amboise forest, set in wooded parkland.

Yes

Chateaux are built and maintained to be expensive:

One truly authentic Chateau is the Chateau de Guerinet at Orchaise which is around 30 mins towards Blois from Amboise.

Another great place in Amboise centre is Le Vieux Manoir, although more of a large mansion than a Chateau it is very Chateau like.

beware chateau guerinet. i was just about to make a booking earlier this year but when the bill was emailed through for payment the bill was incorrect. i emailed pointing this out and requesting clarification........4 emails later no one responded so i have booked elsewhere.

if this is their upfront service i would not want to spend my hard earned on them

If you look up the word "chateau" in a dictionary I can guarantee you will not find the word inexpensive on the same page............ Doubly so for great!

A night in a chateau will cost you about the same as a long weekend in a decent hotel

What is your definition of expensive? Is $200 US too expensive? Also, what is your definition of Chateau? Do you want something from the 1800's or much earlier? Give me an idea of your tastes and I'll try to recommend something. Where are you staying in Amboise? Will you have a car?

Probably less than $250/night if possible. Yes I will have a car. I don't have any specific requests regarding what kind of chateaus but ones with views of the valley and beautiful grounds would suffice I suppose.

Chateau de Chissay was recommended [http://www.chateauchissay.com]. I looked at the site and they are located in the country south-east of Amboise. You would take the D61 to Montrichard, then it's North-East from there. (Thanks maps.google.com!) They offer single rooms for 90 Euro - which I double to $180 US a night (if you have a little change back, then whoopee!)

Castle de Pray http://praycastel.online.fr/gb/index_gb.htm

Their rooms are 120-185 Euro.

Le Clos Amboise http://www.leclosamboise.com/AtmosUK.asp

86-170 Euro

A little over budget - www.chateau-de-perreux.com/EN/suites.html

Chateau de Gizeau - 160 Euros - Close to Saumur http://gizeux.creaweb.fr/accueil_fr.php?id=29

Way South of Amboise

www.chateaubouesse.com/htm/en/hotel.html

About 90-minutes South, but cool.

I've considered this one myself. But it is far from everything.

Well, that should get you started. Let me know what you decide. I'm also going in June!

Blimey - all those prices are a bit eye-watering! Dunno if any of them are really Chateau tho..... more country houses masquerading as castles.

Mind you - stretch the definition a little bit further, I could claim my hosue as a chateau. That would be way cool. (It's already older in parts than most the ones on the list, just not as pointy)

Thanks Spa Nancy,

I've looked into Chateau de Pray, Noizay and the ones mentioned earlier in this string. Clos d'Amboise and Le Manoir Les Minimes both look really nice but I am not sure they are chateaus more like luxurious hotels, but nice they are. There seems to be many positive reviews for chateau des ormeaux on tripadvisor. so I am leaning towards that at the moment. You might want to check it out.
