Tour planning

My wife & I want to spend 4/5 days touring the Loire in August in our car using hotel accommodation. I would appreciate suggestions for the route to include historic sites primarily but also other places of interest and outstanding beauty.

Our first visit to the area was a one night stay last year at Fontevraud, which we loved, and it inspired us to explore some more of this beautiful area. Fontevraud need not be included this time.

No one should be planning your route except you since you know what your interests are and what you want to see. It sounds like you need to get a guidebook so you know what sorts of things might interest you in the Loire. I like the Michelin Green Guides but everyone has their favorites. Do you know where you want to base? You posted in the Amboise forum so I'm assuming you want a central base in the Loire. I can tell you I stayed in an old château on a wine estate just a few minutes outside of Amboise that my wife and I were very happy with. It was called the Château de Pintray:

I'll give you some links to some of the tourist office websites in the region and if you spend some time searching them you'll learn a lot about what you could see and do in the Loire.

Michelin guide is excellent once you know what you are wanting to do, but you have to work at it to find the information you need as it is arranged (sort of alphabetically) and the maps in it are not good. You may do better to start with Eyewitness Loire Valley.

It has good maps and lots of pictures. There is enough detail and it covers all the 'must sees' as well as many others (often as good) places not on the usual itinerary. This will give you an idea what to do and see.

You will get a lot more from your trip if you do some preliminary research. What may be on my 'todo' list could be your 'avoid at all costs' list.

That is very kind of you to spend so much time with your recommendations and I will explore those links as soon as soon as I get some time. I am looking forward to researching as well as actually going.
