Your credit card may or may not work. It is safest to head for a toll gate that takes cash. They give change if necessary.

The system is explained if you scroll down a bit on www.nickbooth.id.au/Tips/FrenchDrive.htm

Hi

Had a great stay at St Malo visited Mont St Michel ,my credit card with chip and pin did not work at the A28 toll booth and no attendant on duty but once you figure out where to put your paper bill in the machine you wil receive change also the card didn't work when leaving the Mont St Michel parking lot if you are using a card you have to use the payment stations at the Info Centre or you will have to park again and walk back

This year we got a Sanef tag which means you can drive straight through. You then get billed when you return home. We loved it though it was a bit of a shock when we saw how much we had paid in tolls from Calais to Beziers and back again!

But, so far as I know, the Sanef card has to be linked to a European bank account or credit card, so it is not available to the Canadian OP.

Hi

It can be linked to a UK bank account - we regularly travel on the toll roads in France - we have thought about getting the Sanef card - but you don't save any money so have never bothered.

Our UK debit card works fine on the toll roads - or it used to - nowadays we use our French cards instead.
