10 days in tours

We are thinking of flying into tours. Excuse my ignorance but not familiar with area. Would this be a good spot to stay or is there somewhere nicer which is easy(ish) to get to. We wont have a car. We love to walk and would like some nice day trips.

I know this doesn't give much info but not really sure what were after. (We are 3 adults and 1 16 year old)

Thanks for any help given.

Getting around the Loire Valley is easier if you have a car. You can pick up hire cars at Tours Airport.

If you decide not to have a car, then in my opinion Tours is the best place to stay. It has a nice old quarter, and there are lots of bars and restaurants.

You can take a train from Tours to Chenonceaux, and from Tours to Chinon. There are also half day and whole day minibus trips to the various chateaux which depart from Tours Centre station.

Tours is a very long town, spanning both the Loire and the Cher rivers. When booking a hotel check its position on Google maps or ViaMichelin, and make certain it is not too far from the centre, say Place Jean Jaures. If you don't know the area you can finish up in a hotel which is still in Tours, but a half hour walk to the centre with all the restaurants etc.

Yes, Tours is by far the best place to stay if you are relying on publc transprt to get about. In addition to the places reachable by train that have been mentioned there are regular rail services along the Loire Valley both upstream through Blois and Orleans and downstream through Saumur and Angers. It is also possibe to get to Loches and, north to Le Mans.

Have a look at the Tours Office de Tourisme website - www.ligeris.com
