Travel by car in France and finding accommodation.

My wife and I are planning to travel to France in Sept - Oct 2014.

We plan to hire/lease a car and drive around France stopping overnight when and where we feel like.

Is there an easy why of sourcing accommodation in French cities, villages and towns ie: the tourist office?

We would prefer not to have to book ahead as it may restrict our options for impromptu stops along the way.

It also puts pressure on to meet deadlines which is not the ideal on holidays.

We would be grateful if anyone can offer any advice.

September is still a very busy month in France. If you want to risk having to spend hours each day seeking appropriate accommodation, at least have a cell phone that works in France, a list of possible places, and call them the night before or the morning you set out. The days of folks just showing up at the tourist office (if there is one - it depends on the size of the village/town) and getting a good or even fair recommendation for overnight accommodation have been subsumed by all the Internet options. You'll probably be fine. You'll probably also have a couple of days where you're still looking for a place to lay your head at 10 pm in the dark. And a couple of days where you spend three times your accommodation budget. It will all depend on where you're traveling, of course, and it will probably all even out over the course of the trip. Good luck.

We did this years ago in September and usually had our accommodation sorted by 3pm each day. There were hotel associations in France such as Logis, Relais du Silence, so wherever we stayed we would collect any relevant hotel listing guide. I suspect there are some of these still operating although most listings are now on the web. One thought is to stay in Ibis hotels and get the hotel to book your next night accommodation. These days we have everything pre-booked but you should be OK..
