Where should we stay in Paris?

My husband and I are taking our 20 year old son to Paris in September. Where should we stay and beside sightseeing what do you think he would enjoy seeing?

We just stayed at the Star Etoile Hotel and found it to be very nice. Small rooms as you have everywhere, but modern bathrooms. The hotel and rooms were very clean. Staff was friendly. Internet - for a cost - in the lobby. Location was great for us. Only five minutes from the Arc de Triomphe and a metro station. Quiet rooms. I think we paid 85 euro for a double.

first trip with a 20 year old -- stay in Latin Quarter or Marais

if you will be there for a week or near that - get an apartment which will give you privacy, space, and a kitchen to enjoy local delicacies -- even if you only get snacks and breakfast in it is nice to have --

you can run out to fabulous local bakeries for breakfast goodies every morning ( so much better than what you will get in the hotel breakfast most places) -- you can lay in a supply of interesting looking cheeses from wonderful little shops -- and there are many places in Paris that have really great take out food as well

there is a magazine called pariscope that lists all the concerts (some free, usually classical and in churches) and events -- it is inexpensive and helps you locate interesting events while you are there -- there is a small section in English in the back of the magazine

if you are there long enough a daytrip to Chartres (sit in on Malcolm Miller's lecture on the stain glass) would be good ---

What does your son like to do? It would be difficult to recommend something. If he does not have his heart set on something, then perhaps, you can have him sampled a bit of everything.

Museum:

I personally prefer the Musee L'Orangerie because it is small and it has impressionist paintings, something I like. It is small that you can cover the whole museum in two or three hours and not museumed out. The Louvre should be fine as well. In addition, the Tuleries is next to it.

Jardin Luxembourg: a great place for people watch, taking it slow while you can eat a small lunch there. I usually buy some sandwiches and go there and eat. Also, It is a decent place for jogging if your son is into jogging.

afternoon tea: La Duree or Angelina

Night Tim Stroll: Ile Saint Louis. Marais

The options are endless. We can help you more if you can tell us what your son enjoys doing/seeing.

Well, where do I begin-- I have NEVER read such a "RUDE & OBNOXIOUS" posting. These parents merely seek a nice place to stay and the most popular and well-liked sights--What makes you think the son is nothing but a "brainless freeloader" as you seem to think?

Irish is spot on -- Mommy shouldn't be planning the time of a 20 year old in Paris -- the family should do some homework and EACH of them take responsibility for planning -- maybe that is what they plan to do --

the surest guarantee of an unpleasant travel companion is to haul a man barely out of his teens on a trip and plan it for him -- at least a third of the time should be turned over to the son to plan

I love how people on this board jump to conclusions about what may or may not be happening in other people's families! For all we know, OP may be making a list of suggestions to give her son.

Hmmm... Generational conflict out of thin air.... The OP just asked a simple question.

Young people in their early 20s love the latin quarter, the quarter Beaubourg, the Marais, and Bastille. The parent's generation may not like it but these are the districts that their 20-something kids like. There's nothing wrong with that IMO. It's not like we have much influence by the time they're in they're 20s, no?

Hi Endus,

Bet you never thought you'd find replies like these when you posted your question! I too am planning a September trip and read many of these posts. I'm not taking a 20 year old with me, but if I was I'd tell him to get lost on his own as much as possible and concentrate on enjoying a romantic time with your husband! Or maybe better yet, let the two of them go off on their own and and see what YOU want! You probably already know what you want to see, but I had to chime in because I agree with the comment made about so many young people today having a strong sense of entitlement.
