Round trip from CDG to Louvre

We will arrive at CDG at 2 pm on Friday Nov. 9 for a 9 hour layover and would like to take the quickest, easiest & cheapest transport to the Louvre since it will close at 6 pm. We will fly in on Air France from Los Angeles, but don't know which terminal. We know nothing about Paris! Please help! Emma

Either the Air France bus or the RER would work. I would suggest the RER, mainly because the bus will have to make its way through traffic on a Friday in late afternoon. Be sure you get back to CDG at least 2 hours before your departure (probably not necessary to allow 3, as most people would if the departure were in the morning peak time). That would give you probably about four hours in Paris, allowing for arrival processing, etc., which is time for a walk around and an informal bistro dinner.

Is your 9 hr layover already allowing for the flight being 30-60 minutes late, also one hour to get your luggage and clear customs? Travel time roundtrip into Paris (at least 45 min each way) and at least 2 hrs to check in for departure? If not, than your 9 hrs is easily down to only 3-4.5 hrs and time would be short yet "doable" for a fast tour of the Louvre.

The RER B train and the Metro #1 line would be the best method with transfers to arrive at the underground entrance to the Louvre.

Fron CDG, take RER B in direction of "Massy-Palaiseau" to "Chatelet-Les Halles" station.

Correspondence (transfer) at : Chatelet for the Metro in direction of : "La Defense (Grande Arche)" to : "Palais-Royal" (Musee du Louvre)

If you have longer, than you might prefer a bus and see a little more of Paris above ground. An alternate bus route to the Air France could be the Roissy bus to the Opera, and then a 10 min walk, Metro, or Taxi.

Your inbound Air France flight will probably arrive at CDG #2-E or F (most likely CDG #2-E). So your best bet will be to simply exit the French Customs control point (after the Luggage Collection area and turn onto the main public concourse of the terminal in the direction of the connected SNCF / TGV / RER train station (a distance of no more than 150-200 yards. At the SNCF/TGV/RER train station take the escalators down to the lowest, RER station level of the station. Purchase your tickets (8,20€ one-way DO NOT try to use a US-issued credit card in the automatic vanding machines). Take any RER "B' train ('..P xxx...' --40 mins..or '..K xxx..'--36 mins. to the SAINT MICHEL-NOTRE DAME station (ride the cars at the rear of the train) . When you come up to street level, you should see Notre Dame looming over you...and you will be approx 10-15 mins. on foot from the entrances to Musée du Louvre.

For the return to CDG make certain that the RER 'B' train you take is heading in the direction of AEROPORT CDG (ant train with an '..E xxx..' designation.

Odds are your outbound Air France flight will depart from either CDG #2 E or F or CDG #2-C or D---all immediately adjacent and connected to the AEROPORT CDG 2 TGV RER station.

Re the RER and Metro line !, from the Palais Royale Musee du Louvre station, enter the Louvre at the Richelieu wing, directly across the street.

>>>Palais Royale Musee du Louvre station, enter the Louvre at the Richelieu wing, directly across the street.<<<

There's no need to go up to street level...the PALAIS ROYAL-MUSÉE du LOUVRE station connects directly to the lower Carouusel du Louvre shopping mall and lower entrances to Musée du Louvre.

The RER 'B' to CHATELET-Les HALLES....then looong, under-ground Correspondance (5-8 mins) from the RER arrival platform portion of this s-p-r-a-w-l-i-n-g CHATELET station complex...to the departure platforms for the #1 Metro ligne (heading in the direction of La Défense) the one stop to PALAIS ROYAL-MUSÉE du LOUVRE station and the lower level entrance to the Louvre is a fine idea if the weather is foul. Otherwise if the weather is fair, take the RER 'B' to SAINT MICHEL-NOTRE DAME and stroll / walk (10-15 minutes) to the Louvre from there---see Cathedral de Notre Dame, Conciergerie, Pont Neuf and Pont des Arts across the Seine along the way...instead of the advertising signage along the underground Correspondance passageways down in the Chatelet / Chatelet Les Halles station.
