Questions on Louvre Museum

We want to visit the Louvre Museum to see the famous pieces like Mona Lisa. The ticket prices are listed on its web site:

www.louvre.fr/llv/pratique/tarifs.jsp…

According to its web site, if we go at 6pm on Wednesday or Friday, it will be cheaper. Does that mean that this is a better time to go, as I assume that it will be less crowded?

There are different ticket prices, and I am not sure about this temporary exhibitions and the Hall Napolean. Is the 6 Euros ticket enough for us to see all the famous pieces?

Also, where can we buy advance ticket when we reach Paris?

If we buy it through the museum's web site, is the ticket valid only for a specific day?

What time of year are you planning on visiting?

I have gone to the Louvre many times on the evening when it's open late--I think that it's a good time to go....sometimes I've had the place to myself (or what it seemed like) or there were others, but it's a times when you can avoid most of the 'tour' groups. I've never had to stand in long lines in the evening.

The reduced price ticket will give you full access to the museum - except for any temporary exhibits (they are always extra. The Napoleon III apartments are included in the main ticket.

I don't think it's necessary to purchase an advanced ticket for the late evening openings. Just go to a kiosk in the ticketing area of the Louvre and off you go!

Hi,

We will be in Paris between 5 and 9 May 2008. On 7 May, it is a Wednesday, so I thought that evening might be a good time to go.

You can buy advance tickets for the Louvre and Museum d'Orsay at the FNAC stores. There is one on Champs Elysees. We didn't want to buy the museum pass so we bought our tickets at the FNAC store for the museums we wanted to see.

We bought the Paris museum pass before leaving and I'm glad we did. There is a separate entrance for pass holders at both the Louvre and the D'Orsay which allowed for faster entry. Before you go, download the floor plan of both museums especially the Louvre-it is a huge place and when you have limited time, you should plan exactly which pieces you want to see.

If you enter via the Louvre Metro stop (or the mall entrace on Rue de Rivoli), you can purchase a pass in the mall. You'll see the inverted pyrimid from The DeVinci Code. No lines at entrance door.

Nightime is not crowded and is a nice time to go.

A few rooms are closed in the evening hours but usually nothing major. The History room was closed once when I was there and the Dutch painters once. I hear the Venus de Milo has been moved.

Anyway the evening hours are great.

We entered from the river side -Richlieu entrance maybe -no line ,had passes

Just make sure you have enough time to visit the Louvre. IMHO, one evening doesn't even come close. They're most famous for their paintings, but there is so much more to the Louvre than that. Their collection of Ancient Egyptian antiquities, for example, is absolutely amazing.

Last time my partner and I went to Paris, we spent about 2 full days in the Louvre, and didn't even have time to look at the paintings.

I heard or read somewhere that if you stood in front of everything in the Louvre for one second, it would take five years to see it all. You have to pick and choose what you want to see!

We love the Louvre at night! Uncrowded and a completely different atmosphere - yes, it is cheaper but it is also a more pleasant experience. Because the time you are there in the evening is shorter, make sure you have decided on exactly what you want to see because the place is amazingly huge and complex! It should be enough time to see the major pieces if you have a plan and keep moving.

Enjoy your trip!

I echo the comments about allowing enough time. We had one day at the end of our trip that was completely open - no agenda whatsoever - and we used it to go back the Louvre. We spent all afternoon there one day during our trip, but that was not near enough time. Neither did we get our fill by going back again on the last day. You could spend days on end in there and still not get enough of it, IMO. Such a wonderful place! (And I'm not typically a museum person!)
