Best way to get to La Villette?

I would love to go to the Cite-Sciences museum, and possibly watch a movie in la Geode. I am having trouble finding on the Metro (Website says Metro: Porte de la Villette). Is that actually a stop on the Batobus? M'aider! Actually, if there is a boat tour (which I haven't managed to work into the itinerary yet) that gets us up there, that might work, too, but I'm a little worried if we get off for a few hours, how will we get back?

Take the METRO, Line 7, to Porte de la Villette.

When you are done, do the 'reverse'.

Thank you very much. I now realize that the Metro map in the back of my tour book does not include every stop! I see it clearly now, and agree that is the best way.

I hate it when the maps aren't good in the guidebooks. What's the point otherwise?

You can get free maps at the RATP stations (metro/RER) which will be all inclusive.

The maplink I gave you is on the transportation website for Paris (and Ile de France, I believe). The "itinerary" feature is very good, if you just practice with it a little.

Nutty is right in suggesting line 7 to Porte de la Villette to get to the Cite-Science museum but I would take a different route for the return. After the Museum and Geode walk south through the park and enjoy the other attractions (eg.Music Museum et al). Then take line 5 Porte de Pantin metro stop on Ave. Jean Jaures to returm home.

>>> a different route for the return<<<

As noted above the #7 Metro ligne to PORTE de la VILLETTE is probably the quickest and most direct routing to La Villette...but as an alternative, the public buses make for an excellent alternative and a great platform to see sections of Paris as you go or come that you might not otherwise.

As an example, the #75--Pont Neuf/Porte de la Villette...from the Right Bank end of Pont Neuf...all the way to the end of the ligne at PORTE de la VILLETTE Metro-- www.ratp.info/orienter/f_plan.php…

As also suggested above, the free RATP system-wide transportation map (also a 'serviceable'/functional street map)--'..PARIS-GRAND PLAN--Lignes et Rues..' is a great resource for finding and planning public transportation routes throughout the city The '..large format..' (think Texaco road map) is a bit inconvenient to use in tight, crowded spaces...but you can view and 'follow' the progress across the entire city on a single page. They also make great emergency 'umbrellas' in the event of sudden showers...and great 'table linen' for impromptu picnics...so scoop up a couple when opportunity presents.

Merci, KDK!! Next time I'm taking the bus. There's a bus stop for #75 at Porte de Pantin too.

Thank you, those are wonderful suggestions. Perhaps I'll save room and not pack our umbrellas ;) I just explored that website. It would be wonderful to pick up several of those maps and brochures upon our arrival. Do you think I can find them at the airport, maybe at a visitor center?

I took the Canauxrama (sp?) boat tour up the Canal St. Martin and it was fabulous. You pick it up near the Bastille and it drops you near or at La Villette. There are no stops in between, and it takes about 2 1/2 hours if I remember correctly -- if you have the time it's definitely worth it. I learned that there are 60 lockskeepers employed in Paris, I suppose all for this canal (who knew?). You can take the Metro or bus back. Alternatively, you can take the Metro or bus to La Villette and take the boat back to the Bastille. Canauxrama has a Web site and a phone number; I think I called earlier the same day to reserve but I don't think it was necessary. Oh -- and the Streetwise Paris is the best in my opinion for Metro stops, though the map itself seems to be missing the very, very northern end of the city. The map is plastic and will hold up in the rain, but probably not big enough to serve as an umbrella (!).
