business hours this Christmas holiday?

With Christmas falling on a Sat. and Dec. 24 on a Friday this year, will Dec. 24 be the "official" holiday then, just as it is in the US? Should we expec that most shops & markets in Paris (& for that matter in France) will be closed around noon on Thursday, Dec. 23? We are trying to plan our itinerary during that time and want to be sure that we don't plan on doing things or shopping on the wrong day! Thank you in advance for your help!

You'll find that Christmas Eve is the big holiday in France, anyway.

The shops will close early on Christmas Eve, as everyone heads home to share the family celebrations and the enormous feasts.

Christmas Day, most things will be closed.

Sunshine817: Thank you for your reply post. Will Christmas Eve this year be on Dec. 23 then (with Dec. 24 being the "official" Christmas holiday)? Again, thanks!

On Christmas Eve a lot of the stores that are normally open until 8pm or later will be closing around 6-7pm instead. Banks may close around 1pm, but food stores will stay open the latest, to rake in as much money as possible. Otherwise, it is a normal working day and December 23rd will be even more normal (i.e. 100% normal).

The French do not move holidays around, and if they fall on the weekend, it is just tough luck for most people. As commerce has taken over France, you will find that the supermarkets and other food stores will also be open on December 25th in Paris. (Normal stores will be closed.)

Christmas Eve is Christmas Eve, period. There's no monkeying around with moving religious holidays in France, even if most people don't attend mass regularly.

New Year's will follow roughly the same schedule...stores will close a few hours early in the afternoon, then mostly closed on the holiday.

(last year, the Auchan and Carrefour, holdouts of holiday overtime, both closed at 4 pm on the Eves.)

Yes, New Year's will work the same as Christmas except that the metro will run all night, and it will be free of charge from 6pm on the 31st until noon on the 1st.

Christmas Day markets will likely not be open (this is true in the countryside, anyway).

The farmers markets open on their day of the week, rain or shine, no matter what holiday it may be.
